Programs
All students entering the Department of Art at Claflin University will be placed in the Foundation Art sequence. The freshman and sophomore art curriculums will be the same for all art majors at that time. Upon completion of the first semester of the sophomore year, students will then declare a major in one of the disciplines available within the department: ART EDUCATION, STUDIO ART. The student will then continue as outlined in their respective curriculum.
General requirements of the Department of Art
All graduating art majors must complete a Senior Project, install a Senior Exhibition, and successfully pass a Senior Exit Examination. It is the responsibility of the student to initiate and organize these activities. Students are strongly advised to work closely with the Art faculty so that these events can proceed according to schedule.
Program Requirements for the Major in Studio Art
The following are the requirements for students pursuing the liberal arts program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree:

complete the General Education requirements;
- make application for major (usually during the second semester of the freshman year);
- satisfy all test requirement of the institution;
- make application for graduation;
- complete the required number of hours in Art Foundation, major and elective courses;
- have an exhibition of his/her artwork;
- pass the academic Profile and the Departmental Exit Examination;
- attend required Assembly programs;
- satisfy senior thesis or senior project requirements; and
- attend senior seminars.
Program Requirements for the Major in Art Education
The requirements for students pursuing the Teacher Education program leading to the Bachelor of Art degree with a major in Art Education are as follows:
- complete General Education requirements
- make application for a major (usually during the second semester of the freshman year)
- be accepted into the Teacher Education program
- make application for student teaching
- take all tests required by the institution
- complete all requirements for graduation, including major courses, professional education, senior exhibition and other college requirements
- make application for graduation
- attend Assembly programs
- pass the Departmental Exit Examination
- pass Praxis I and Praxis II
