Upward Bound Program Phase

Summer Residential

During the summer, all participants must live on Claflin University’s campus for six weeks.  Participants are permitted to spend weekends at home.

Academic Year

During the academic year, participants must attend Upward Bound meetings two Saturdays per month and attend school tutoring according to need.
               
Students are offered the following services throughout the academic year and summer residential program:

  • Guidance, counseling, and personal development which will result in positive self-concepts and motivation to improve academically, plan career goals, and matriculate at post-secondary institutions.
  • Basic skills development in Reading, Mathematics, and Communication Skills is provided to all participants according to need.
  • Assistance is provided to all participants to remain and complete high school and the Upward Bound program, to improve grades, and to achieve ACT and SAT scores required for admission into post-secondary institutions.
  • Participants are provided culturally enriching experiences which include trips they can relate to their studies and opportunities to express themselves through the Fine Arts.
  • Post-secondary orientation activities include visits to college campuses and the opportunity to participate in the Bridge Summer Program after high school graduation.  Financial Aid assistance includes completing financial aid applications, applying for scholarships, etc.
