Dr. Sonya Kay Ehrhardt, DNP, MSN, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, CPHQ

Dr. Sonya K. Ehrhardt is passionate about allowing God to utilize her professional and life experiences to transform the next generation of nursing professionals into visionary patient advocates with a heart of servant leadership.

Biography

Dr. Sonya K. Ehrhardt received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College in 1989, a BSN from USC Upstate (Mary Black School of Nursing) in 2008 and a dual MSN (Nursing Administration and Nursing Educator) and DNP (Nursing Administration and Leadership) from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing, in 2011and 2013 respectively. Her doctoral project addressed infection prevention in the acute care setting to improve health care outcomes.  She board-certified as an Advanced Nurse Executive (NEA-BC) and a Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ). She is a recipient of the MUSC CON Exemplary Graduate Award in 2017, Palmetto Gold Award for Nursing Excellence in 2011, USC Upstate Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011, APIC Hero Infection Prevention Award in 2009 and Sharps Safety Ideas Initiative Diamond Award Winner in 2002.

As a registered nurse, Dr. Ehrhardt has an extensive clinical background in trauma, neonatal intensive care, adult intensive care, women’s health care, pediatrics, diabetes, wound care, hyperbaric oxygenation, infection prevention and control, epidemiology, alternative therapies (chelation), and family practice. She also has experience in many areas within a hospital setting including nursing clinical leadership, education, bioterrorism/decontamination training, patient safety, quality, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, and administrative leadership.

Dr. Ehrhardt has also served in professional nursing organizations including the SC Board of Nursing and various other SC Healthcare Boards. She has had many speaking engagements related to her areas of expertise. She continues to mentor and collaborate as part of an interprofessional team by mentoring/precepting various MSN and DNP candidates. Her experience of clinical and professional practice provides a strong foundation for her role in preparing the next generation of professional nurses.  Dr. Ehrhardt is one of the original faculty members in the Nursing Department; joining as an adjunct in 2016.
