CALA-Bash to Bring Diverse Array of Art to Claflin University April 8-

Apr 04, 2012

Dr. Ron McCurdy
Claflin University is set unveil a cultural explosion of art, dance, music, theatre and more with the third edition of CALA-Bash (Claflin’s Arts & Letters Annual Bash) April 8-18.

Patrons of CALA-Bash will have a diverse, entertaining menu of options during the week such as the Claflin University Theatre Ensemble’s rendition of the play “Steal Away”- the kick-off event to CALA-Bash - or The Ron McCurdy Quartet presenting The Langston Hughes Project.

The Langston Hughes Project is a multimedia presentation based on the works of the legendary poet.  Dr. Ron McCurdy, who leads the quartet and is a professor of music with the Thronton School of Music at the University of Southern California, says the presentation recreates Hughes’ vision of the global struggle for freedom in the early 1960’s using a suite of poems illustrated with spoken word artistry, a live jazz quartet and power visual imagery on screen.

This Alonzo Webster Lyceum Event will take place on Friday, April 13 at 7 p.m. in the Whittaker V. Middleton Fine Arts Center.  All CALA-Bash are free and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.

The next day on Saturday, Friday 14 at 2 p.m. on the lawn of Legacy Plaza will be a Concert on the Lawn featuring Eric Roberson and poetess Georgia Me.

Roberson has a music career that spans two decades and has seen him write for the likes of Will Smith, Jill Scott, Musiq and Carl Thomas, among others.  In 2001, he launched his record label B.L.U.E. Erro Soul which has released eight albums.  He became the first independent artist to be nominated for a BET Award in 2007 and received the Underground Artist of the Year BETJ Virtual Award in 2008.  Roberson was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance category in 2010 and 2011.  Roberson’s songs have appeared on the Billboard and I Tunes charts.

Georgia Me has been a featured poet on “Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry” and on Broadway.  In 2001, she was named Poetry Slam Champion of Atlanta.  Georgia Me has also done readings with Phylicia Rashad and Jeffrey Wright.

Patrons will have multiple opportunities to witness the Theatre Ensemble’s performance of “Steal Away” by Ramona King. The play features all female cast of African-American women who take the fight into their own hands for equality and education.  On Sunday, April 8 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. “Steal Away” will be shown at the Whittaker V. Middleton Fine Arts Center.  There will two performances at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday, April 9.  The final performance will on Tuesday, April 10 at 7 p.m.
