In sports, working well and knowing your teammate often equates to a recipe for success. Ricky Hill and Ed Johnson proved that old adage to be true at the 7th Annual Claflin University Golf Classic on Nov. 2 by firing an incredible 57 to win the two-man best ball tournament.
“Ed (Johnson) is a scratch golfer and we know each other’s games really well,” said Hill who is s six handicap golfer from Columbia.
“I hit good drives and Ricky made all the putts,” said Johnson of their winning formula.
The Classic is held every year to benefit the Focus 100 Scholarship fund, an emergency assistance endowment for student who otherwise couldn’t attend the University due to financial hardship. The Classic raised more than $24,720 this year.
Keith Clarke, who is a new member of the Claflin Board of Trustees, and Chuck Rhoden finished in second. Rodney Hudson, Claflin’s director of auxiliary services, and Rhett Jenkins, who was part of the team that won the Classic two years ago, placed third.
Hill said his favorite moment of the day came on the par 3 8th hole of Cobblestone Park Golf Club’s Black Course. Johnson knocked a 7 iron to around 35 feet from the pin on the uphill hole against the wind. Then, Hill managed to make the long putt to solidify their championship run. As good as that felt, Hill said helping out students is even more rewarding.
“It feels pretty good knowing where that money is going toward. Helping the kids makes this win even better,” said Hill.
Prizes were also given for closest to the pin and longest drive on specific holes. Paul V. Fant, co-chair of the Classic and chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, won honors for closest to the pin while Chris Branham won the longest drive contest.
President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale thanked all of the sponsors and golfers who ensured the Classic’s success.
“You are supporting a strong university that is fighting every day to be stronger,” said Tisdale.
