A prestigious honor has come to a member of the Claflin University Board of Trustees. Calvin H. Elam was promoted to Brigadier General, becoming the first African-American to achieve this rank in the S.C. Air National Guard. Elam has been a member of the University’s Board of Trustees since 2009 and currently serves as chair of the Board’s Budget and Finance Committee. He was promoted during a special ceremony Sunday.

Claflin University will remember the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special observance ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 17.

The United Negro College Fund announced that Dr. Angela Peters, chair of the Department of Chemistry, has been selected to participate in the UNCF-360 Leadership and Coaching Project supported by the American Express Corporation.

Claflin University has entered into a partnership with Savannah River Remediation to encourage and promote student careers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) areas.

Thanksgiving is a time for everyone to give thanks for the blessings in their life. At Claflin University, the holiday is also a time to give back. All Claflin University departments and organizations donated 94 decorative boxes containing items to make a Thanksgiving meal, such as ham, turkey, greens and dressing. The boxes provided 92 local families in need with a Thanksgiving meal.
