MAGICIANS LATE RALLY SINKS PANTHERS 85-75 Orangeburg, SC- The Panthers (7-5) (7-4) could not hold off the Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College in the late going, and suffered their first defeat of the New Year 85-75. The Panthers and Magicians played on even terms for most of the game, and with 6:11 left in the game the score reflected how close the game was, as the score was deadlocked at 65-65. Claflin took the lead on a free throw by Eric Salley to make the score 66-65 with 5:25 left. But the lead was short lived as the Magicians went on a 9-0 run beginning when Jermy Anderson who scored six of his 13 points in the final six minutes, connected on a three point attempt and ended with a Taurean Moy deuce to give the Magicians a lead they would not relinquish 75-66. Anthony Pigram ended the run with a basket in the lane to cut the lead to seven points with 2:57 showing on the game clock. The Magicians worked their magic and went on another 5-2 run by the 1:02 mark to go up by 12 points 82-70. Claflin’s Eric Salley and LeMoyne-Owen’s Moy traded three point baskets to go along with a Kendall Holly bucket for the Panthers closed out the remainder of the scoring, as the Magicians took the 85-75 win. The Panthers fell behind early in the contest 11-1 before cutting the Magicians lead to just two points 17-19 with 8:44 in the first half. There were three ties in the first half the last coming with 1:44 left in the opening stanza 33-33. The Panthers outscored the Magicians 9-3 the rest of the half to take a six point lead into the dressing room 42-36. Moy lead all scorers with 23 points for the Magicians. Maurice Mickens, tallied 18 points. LaDarius Johnson collected 14 points, and Jermy Anderson added 13 points. The Panthers were led by Eric Salley with 22 points, while Anthony Pigram tossed in 19 points in the losing cause. The Panthers and Pantherettes will be back in action Wednesday evening at 5:30 pm when the Tigers of Benedict College, pays a visit to the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center. |
