Claflin is committed to helping our first-year students successfully navigate their transition into college life.
The Panther Students in Transition Engaged and Preparing for Success (STEPS) program connects freshmen to resources designed to help them reach their full potential.
The ability to undertake college-level work can be a significant challenge for some freshmen students, and our institutional data has shown that students’ lack of preparation in English, mathematics and reading can impact their ability to master higher-level skills and lead to lower retention and graduation rates. A key facet of our Quality Enhancement Plan, STEPS is a learning community designed to provide integrated academic and support services to facilitate student success by providing all traditional first-year students with the essential foundation of a liberal arts education in key subject areas.
Panther STEPS operates based on two primary learning outcomes:
- Improve student higher level thinking skills via enhancement of gatekeeper courses
- Increase student engagement in service and community learning activities via the Freshman Year experience.
