Academic Support Service Program

The Academic Success Center offers a structured, meaningful, and effective individual and group academic support service program designed to meet student’s academic goals.

Academic Support Service is open to all students enrolled at Claflin University.  Student Success Leaders assist students with course content’ provide a safe and engaging environment that promotes student success and academic excellence. Students who participate in the academic support service program are expected to meet the following outcomes:

  • Improved course completion and grade point average
  • Increased understanding of course content
  • Increased communication and participation during class lecture
  • Improved self-confidence with academic experience
  • Improved self-motivation for meeting academic goals

The Academic Support Service Program

  • Offers high-quality academic support
  • Creates a learning environment that presents material according to students’ learning needs and styles
  • Encourages students to become independent learners.
    Helps students develop self-confidence, and demonstrate a positive attitude toward learning
  • Assists students with achieving their highest academic goal and potential
  • Improves student retention, reduce course withdrawal/failure rates, as well as improve course completion and success rates in courses academic support service was provided

Our most frequently requested courses are:

  • College Algebra
  • Pre-Calculus
  • Calculus
  • English Composition
  • Elementary Spanish
  • General Biology
  • General Chemistry

Additional courses are offered upon request.

What to Expect from a Academic Support Session

To meet the expected outcomes of an academic support service session, students must come prepared with course syllabus, textbook, notes and specific questions. To assist with meeting the expected outcomes, Student Success Leaders will:

  • Reinforce and clarify classroom instruction and textbook lessons to enhance students understanding of course material
  • Assist students to become independent and confident learners
  • Help students with understanding course work and identifying their learning style
  • Assist students with developing and improving study strategies.

What not to Expect from an Academic Support Session

  • Student Success Leaders will not complete assignments, write, edit, proofread papers, or provide answers
  • Student Success Leaders will not re-teach course material. Students must attend class, do the assigned reading, and take notes to ensure that their academic support service session is effective
  • Student Success Leaders will not be available only for study sessions before exams
  • Students are expected to meet with their Student Success Leader(s) for all scheduled appointment during the semester

Monday –Thursday 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Located in WVM ROOM 106

Scheduled appointments for sessions are recommended. However, walk-ins are accepted on a first come first served basis.
