The Leaders Learning in Communities for Success (LinCs) program provides resources and services that will improve persistence, academic outcomes and levels of engagement for first generation students as they transition and matriculate during their first year of college.
Through a structured learning community model, enrolled students participate in a number of activities that will strengthen their connection to the university, become actively involved in and out the classroom, as well as build relationships that will assist with transitional barriers from high school to college.
LinCs provides an “anytime, anywhere” learning experience that will give them first hand access to support services and assistance.
LinCs Participants
Students who participate in the Learning in Communities for Success program must meet the following criteria’s:
- First generation students who are entering college as a first time freshman (from high school to college)
- Have the desire to learn the skills to become a leader for the world
LinCs Goals
- Assist students with transitioning from high school to college
- Develop and prepare leaders to become visionaries for their community and global society
- Provide a learning environment and network of support services that promotes educational and career opportunities
- Help students to become more independent, self-confident, and proficient learners
- Increase student engagement with their professors in and out the classroom
- Improve first generation students persistence and degree completion
What are Learning Communities?
- An innovative approach to learning designed to enhance student success and engagement
- A small group of 20-25 students who share similar characteristics
- Students take three courses together with a common theme, content, and materials
- A small group of students and faculty working collaboratively in a friendly, supportive atmosphere designed to enhance students learning experience

Program activities are interactive, engaging, and designed to produce leaders and allow students to work closer with their peers and faculty; as well as to get students connected, grow intellectually and socially, achieve better grades and succeed.
