Sport Management

The road to working in professional, intercollegiate, minor league, and Olympic sports starts in the Sport Management program.

Curriculum

The Sport Management program allows students to study sports administration. Courses in the program are interdisciplinary with the Sport Management program and the Business Administration program. The Sport Management program prepares students to become trained in event management, marketing and promotions, facility management, sport law, professional ethics, communications, and finance.

The Claflin University Sport Management Curriculum includes academic and practical learning experiences. During the second semester of the sophomore year, students will complete a pre-internship experience that allows them to work with local sport organizations as means for gaining hands-on experience in the field. As a result, students are prepared to complete a full 10-week internship experience during the last semester of the senior year.

Student Opportunities and Experience

The Sport Management program has a number of opportunities for students to engage in research with faculty; attend sport management conferences such as the MIT Sloan Analytics Conference; plan, organize and direct sporting events; events and initiatives each year; support the local community; and work with professional, intercollegiate, and minor league sport organizations.

Past graduates have supported events including the Jim Valvano Basketball Tournament for Cancer Research; the Claflin University Intramural Sports Showcase; the Claflin University Pre-Homecoming Basketball Tournament; the Hoop for Change Ronald McDonald House Basketball Tournament; the Claflin University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Basketball Tournament; and Claflin's own Intramural Sports.

Selected internships have been with noted organizations and clubs including the Atlanta Falcons; University of South Carolina; Northwestern University; the Atlanta Braves; Cal Ripken Baseball; the Indianapolis Colts; and United States Tennis Association.

Careers and Outcomes

A sport management degree from Claflin University provides students with the theoretical and practical infrastructure needed to excel in the following career paths: sport merchandising; Olympic games; intercollegiate athletics; facility management; professional athletics; and sport media.
