Gain confidence and competence while developing the skills needed to teach K-12 art through Claflin's Art Education program. Our program is designed to equip students with a comprehensive teaching education as well as certification to teach Kindergarten through 12th grade in the state of South Carolina.
Curriculum
Like all Claflin University students, students majoring in Art Education will start with general education requirements, which includes history, communications, science, the humanities and philosophy. Art Education coursework begins during the first year of study.
Student Opportunities and Experience
As a Claflin Art student, you'll have access to many experiential learning options, such as research projects, mentorship connections, regional museum travel, and international study abroad opportunities.You can join a variety of on-campus clubs and organizations, including the Department's own Art Club. We encourage students to display their work at annual art exhibitions, both on- and off-campus, and to participate in industry conferences, so there's always an opportunity to learn, grow and share your creativity at Claflin.
Careers and Outcomes
Students can become certified to teach in a K-12 school system, or go on to graduate school to earn a master's degree in art education and/or other related fields. With the master's a graduate can teach on the university level, and/or become a corporate trainer, online educator, arts administrator, etc.
Art Education is evolving on a global scale and becoming increasingly technological, multicultural and interdisciplinary in nature. We've incorporated digital media courses into our curriculum to ensure our graduates are fully prepared and competitive in the creative environment in which they work.
