Sociology

Our Sociology program is designed to help students develop fundamental knowledge of social problems and the appropriate methods and theories used to resolve them. Our program will teach you the fundamental skills needed to conduct research, apply statistical analysis to evaluate research findings and present your analysis in many areas of social sciences.

Curriculum

Our program curriculum offers a balanced collection of sociology fundamentals and interest-driven course options designed to help you develop into an analytical thinker. Initially, you'll take courses like Introduction to Sociology; Global Social Problems; and Marriage, Kinship and Family. Then, you'll progress into our core courses on social theory, statistics and research methods and gain insights into the complexity of social issues. In your final level of study, we encourage you to take advanced electives in areas of your choosing, such as race, gender, law, and research methods.

Student Opportunities and Experience

Students have a chance to work collaboratively with faculty to examine and research some of the most pressing social issues of the day. Mentor-based research, undergraduate conferences, and chances to showcase your work are routinely available to all students.

Careers and Outcomes

Many of our students go on to graduate school in programs like the Master of Social Work, education or counseling. For those that do not go to graduate school, most graduates find work in the human services field such as hospice care, social services, juvenile justice. Other graduates go into business such as insurance broker, hospital administration or retail management.
