If you envision yourself as a physician or as someone trying to make the world a better place by developing a cure or making a big discovery, you’ve come to the right place. If you are concerned about the environment and want to make a real difference then a Biology major is for you.

Curriculum

The Biology Major curriculum is designed to provide you with knowledge and understanding of and appreciation for the intricacies of living organisms and their interactions with the environment. Our curriculum prepares you to be ready for leadership and service in our diverse global society. Relevant contemporary issues are incorporated into a program designed to prepare its majors for careers in the biological or biotechnical sciences and related areas, including entry into graduate and professional schools (medicine, dentistry, allied health and public health, etc.).

Student Opportunities and Experience

As a biology student, you will quickly feel part of our tight-knit "Claflin Family" from the classroom to the lab. You will gain the "Claflin Confidence" that has helped so many of our graduates present research findings at national conferences and get into and succeed in graduate schools, medical programs, and professional careers.

Summer and academic year internships are essential for rounding out your resume and getting real world experience that allows you to make the most out of your future biology career. Internships have been shown to improve grades, heighten understanding of science concepts, and allow you to apply your skills to the real world. Claflin University's School of Natural Sciences offered over 110 academic year and 108 summer research internships for students in the last three years.

Careers and Outcomes

The Biology major is a springboard to so many different careers and fields of study. The faculty involved with the biology major are heavily involved in research and there are ample opportunities to do research internships in a variety of fields including cancer research, Public Health, plant biotechnology, and DNA forensics.

We prepare our students to meet competitive requirements for application into prestigious medical, dental, pharmacy and other professional health schools, along with graduate school and professional careers. Our students are routinely accepted into leading institutions across the nation, such as Princeton, Duke, USC, MUSC, Clemson, University of Florida, Johns Hopkins, Purdue, LSU, Indiana University, University of Virginia, University of Texas and many other Research One institutions.

Job opportunities exist also in other life science sectors, including the pharmaceutical industry, in medical information services, medical writing and publishing. Jobs are available in the environmental, agriculture, energy, food, manufacturing and production, marketing and sales, information systems, quality control and regulatory affairs sectors to name just a few.
