Study Abroad

The Mission of the Office of Global Education is to initiate and  to mediate opportunities for students and faculty to strategically engage the spaces, places and activities that promote the development of globally engaged citizenship and effective leadership. The intention is to graduate students who have 21st century skills and sensibilities and entrust them to become ambassadors equipped with these competencies and capabilities. Our institution is as loyalty is as firmly positioned in the cultivation of human capital as it is committed to growing human conscience.

1. Current cumulative grade point average of (2.75 minimum).  
2. Please see the Office of Financial Aid: 
           Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA)
           Complete further procedures and processes required for compliance with financial aid.
3. Academic advisement and pre-registration are required for all students studying abroad.
4. Students are expected to meet with their academic advisors and select appropriate coursework for the semester/period away as well as for the semester they expect to return to Claflin University. 
5. Students must register for the appropriate level of Study Abroad (STUD 200, 300, or 400) during the study abroad period. 
6. The student should have no past or pending disciplinary issues that would prevent successful completion of a global education program.
7. Students must have earned at least 30 credit hours at Claflin University. 

Spring Break Study Abroad:  Personal/family financing, loans; community or other fundraising.

Summer Study Abroad:  Methods of payment are financial aid. Please note that qualification for financial aid requires being registered for at least six credit hours during the summer with room and board. The trip must include academic credit and travel must occur within the timeframe of summer school. Consult with a financial aid advisor in The Office of Financial Aid to discuss your financial aid options.

Semester Study Abroad:  Methods of payment are financial aid. Please note that qualification for financial aid requires being registered for at least six credit hours during the summer with room and board. The trip must include academic credit and travel must occur during the semester. Consult with a financial aid advisor in The Office of Financial Aid to discuss your financial aid options.

Center of Disease Control Health Guide for Healthy Travel

Students participating in Global Education Programs should follow the steps below: 

*Application requirements for internships are variable. Please see the Director of Global Education for consultation. Offerings will be announced.

1. Seek guidance from faculty (academic) advisor about Global Education Programs in relation to their degree      
     programs and career interests/preparation. 
2. Academic advisement and pre-registration are required for all students' participation in Global Education Programs.
3. Students are expected to meet with their academic advisors and select appropriate coursework for the
    semester/period away as well as for the semester they expect to return to Claflin University. 

Students receiving financial aid, must comply with the same financial aid procedures that they follow when studying on campus at Claflin University. Final approval by Claflin University to engage Global Education Programs is not granted without completion of the requirements of financial aid. A stamped, approved course schedule and a copy of the Financial Aid Award Letter must be attached to relevant application forms.

Students must register for the appropriate level of Study Abroad (STUD 200, 300, or 400) and acquire the signature of the Director of Global Education. 

In an effort to provide a smooth transition between Claflin University and the selected institution, students are encouraged to enroll in coursework that is applicable to their program of study. 

All coursework taken at the visiting institution will be added to their official academic transcript upon receipt of their official grade reports.

4. Faculty advisors will then alert the Office of Global Education of each student’s interest engaging in Global Education
    Programs. 

1. Complete Post Global Perspective Inventory (GPI) – MANDATORY  

2. Visit the Office of Career Development in coordination with the Office of Global Education to discuss experience and update resume.
