Can’t be as bad as Matthew, student says

Hurricane Florence at Category 4 is making its way rapidly toward South Carolina.

Claflin University students had to evacuate campus on Sept. 10 due to the Hurricane Florence threat. It was predicted that Florence would impact South Carolina and the Midlands, so many students went home.

Sophomore Mykel Barno had a few choice of words on her feelings about the hurricane.

“Hurricanes are nothing new to me but this one in particular isn't bad so far,” Barno said.

Barno is from Darlington. She’s used to hurricanes because South Carolina as a whole has big storms every fall.

“Hurricane Matthew was something I never thought I’d experience,” she said. “It looked like a tornado was right in my back yard.”

Matthew hit in October 2016. “We had no power for a week, a tree fell into the road, roads were blocked off by my house, road signs fell and we had no hot water,” Barno said.

Matthew is the only hurricane in her life that has really scared her, Barno said. She hopes Florence won’t be as bad.
