Honda’s representative talked about the company’s opportunities and benefits during the CHEC Career Expo on Feb. 13.

Chasity McClam, S.C. State graduate, said Honda offers internships and co-ops for graduating seniors. The co-ops are divided into three semesters, so a person can work one semester and go to school the next.

She said it helps “to see what you really like.”

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of African-Americans in manufacturing unless you’re on the line, she said. A lot of people who hire look for manufacturing experience.

“I told myself, I will never work on nobody’s line,” McClam said.

Once she started working at Honda, she realized she loved what she did. “You get to work, travel and dress up.”

Honda has a lot of public speaking engagements, so mass communications major students should consider the company. The best thing to do is to get into an internship or co-op program, she said.

“That guarantees you a job.”

In its 21st year, the expo featured more than 30 vendors, including those from the military, education, engineering and law enforcement. The event, held at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center at South Carolina State University this year, is a collaborative effort of S.C. State, Claflin University and Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College.
