Claflin University broke ground on a new Biotechnology and Innovation Center on Friday, March 20, 2026, marking a major expansion in science and technology programs.
The 31,872-square-foot facility will focus on areas such as biosciences, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and environmental science. It will include multiple labs and classrooms, advancing technology to give students hands-on experience and expanded research opportunities.
“It is a historic moment for the institution,” Claflin University President Dwaun J. Warmack said.
The center will support degrees in computer science, biotechnology and cybersecurity, including several master programs, and it is expected to strengthen research partnerships and funding opportunities.
For students, the new building represents increased access to resources and career preparation.
“The new center will provide great opportunities for students to do great work,” sophomore Nigel Bradley said.
Student Government Association Vice President Myles-Anthony Johnson said the facility will help students compete beyond campus.
“I think the building is a phenomenal opportunity for us to expand our reach in the STEM department,” Johnson said. “When students go into these industries, they already have training because we have the facilities at the university level.”
The $17.4 million project is fully funded through a grant from the U.S Department of Commerce and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
“This building is 100% funded, so we don’t take out any loans, any student tuition or anything out of this facility,” Warmack said
University officials say the center will also improve research capabilities and prepare students for careers in emerging industries.
