Claflin library partnership expands opportunities for students

Claflin University’s newly renovated H.V. Manning Library is more than just a quiet space for studying – it has become a hub for academic resources, community engagement and innovation in 2025.

Known for its rich collection of books and digital resources, the library is now taking its efforts to the next level by partnering with the Columbia-based South Carolina State Library to encourage students and community members to sign up for an SC State Library Card.

The partnership opens new opportunities for Claflin students to access resources beyond the university’s collection. Through the SC State Library Card, students can explore an extensive array of online databases, e-books and research materials, as well as borrow physical items from state libraries.

“Students often feel limited by what’s available on campus,” said Marilyn Gibbs Drayton, director of the H.V. Manning Library. “This partnership bridges that gap, giving them access to a statewide network of resources. It’s especially helpful for students conducting in-depth research for working on capstone projects.”

The library has already begun hosting workshops and information sessions to help students sign up for the SC State Library Card.

Sophomore computer engineering major Leo Morris said the initiative has been a game-changer for him.

“I signed up last week and I’ve already found primary sources for my research paper on Reconstruction. It’s like having the whole state’s library system at your fingertips.”

In addition to the partnership, the H.V. Manning Library has continued to offer popular services, including quiet study spaces, technology support and access to specialized archives. With its focus on providing top-tier resources and fostering community connections, the library remains a cornerstone of academic success at Claflin.

“Our goal is to equip students with the tools they need to succeed, both academically and personally,” Drayton said. “Partnering with the S.C. State Library is just one of many ways we’re working towards that vision.”
