CALA-Bash was full of events that would grab the attention of the student body, faculty and staff.
However, it was the NPHC Yard Show that served as the staple attraction.
Friday’s list of events consisted of: Admitted Students’ Day, Senior Art Exhibit, multiple stage performances and the NPHC Yard Show. The events were catered to showcasing the talents that Claflin students possess, while also promoting the university.
The organizations that participated in the NPHC Yard Show were: Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, and Zeta Phi Beta. Each organization had 10 minutes to put together a compilation of strolling, stepping, organization and/or chapter history.
While no winners were being chosen for the yard show, there was an abundance of friendly competition among the various organizations. As a result, the crowd created an electric atmosphere.
“The atmosphere of the yard show was incredible; it’s always a great time when we can come together and put on a great show for the students,” said Kylon Watson, member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.
Being that Calabash is scheduled during the springtime, there are plenty of new initiates of various organizations who also participated in the yard show.
Shakira Shirer, a spring 2023 initiate of the Mu Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., said, “It was definitely an eye-opener for me. It taught me the importance of dedication and commitment, and also the importance of working together as a team.”
The weather played the cat-and-mouse game throughout the entire show with rain showers threatening the area. The rain finally came pouring just as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity finished their performance.
The rain eventually went on to disrupt the rest of the outdoor performances that were scheduled to take place on the outside stage.
Friday concluded with dinner and music inside the Jonas Thomas Kennedy Wellness Center.
