Claflin shines at CIAA Tournament despite tough losses

Claflin University made a strong showing at the 2025 Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball Tournament in March.
While neither team secured a championship, their performances were a
testament to Claflin’s student-athletes.
The Claflin Panthers fell short in the CIAA quarterfinals against Lincoln
University from Pennsylvania. The closely contested game ended in a 56-53 loss,
cutting short Claflin’s hopes of advancing further. Despite the defeat, the
team showcased strong defensive play and teamwork, earning respect from fans
and competitors alike.
Jalen Williams, one of the team’s standout players, reflected on the
tournament experience: “This loss stings, but we’ve built something special
this season. We fought hard, and that’s what Claflin basketball is all about.
“We’re going to use this as fuel to come back even stronger next year."
The Lady Panthers made an impressive start in the tournament, defeating
Elizabeth City State University 50-39 in a dominant defensive performance.
Advancing to the quarterfinals, they faced Virginia Union University. Despite a
strong effort, Claflin fell just short, 59-55.
Senior guard Nya Morris played a crucial role throughout the season and
tournament. Reflecting on the team’s journey, Morris said, "It's not just
about competing, it's about representing the legacy of all the women who paved
the way for us to be here."
Beyond basketball, Claflin’s presence was felt throughout the tournament
with its cheerleading squad and band performances.
The Claflin University Band captivated audiences at the CIAA Fan Fest 2025,
delivering an performance that highlighted the school’s musical prowess.
Meanwhile, the cheerleading squad brought enthusiasm and pride, rallying fans
and adding to the tournament’s atmosphere.
