Dean of Students Dr. Arthur Doctor speaks to Panther reporters.
The most exciting time of year for the Claflin community is approaching, and this year’s homecoming is expected to bring something new while keeping tradition, Dean of Students Dr. Arthur Doctor said at an Oct. 28 session with Panther reporters.
The celebration kicks off with the homecoming concert lineup, K Camp and Bunna B, which was announced during Midnight Madness on Oct. 15. The concert is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22, in the Tullis Arena; doors open at 8:15 pm and the show starts at 9.
“We've seen tremendous and positive feedback from not only alumni, but the community,” Doctor said. “I was getting my hair cut last week in Orangeburg and my barber and everybody in the shop was asking about tickets to the concert because they wanted to see K Camp.”
Claflin has history of bringing in up-and-coming artist who later become major celebrities.
“We had Megan Thee Stallion in 2019, after she left Claflin, she blew up,” Doctor said. “My first year here, we had Latto, and after performing, she was named BET’s New Artist of the Year. We also had Young Dolph before he passed away, and NoCap performed here a few years ago.”
“If any artists are watching this or you see this article, make sure next time when we come calling, just know, if you want to pop off, you need to come to Claflin,” Doctor said.
Along with the two artists, a Claflin student artist will get the opportunity to perform during the concert. “Auditions for that will come from SAB fairly soon,” Doctor said.
As to the list of events for homecoming, Doctor said, “I can truly say that this year we will have different kind of events that I think will intrigue the campus community that are outside some of the things we've done in the past few years, while also maintaining some of the traditional events as well.”
Safety planning is still underway following recent incidents of violence that have taken place on and near HBCU campus around the country.
