Matriculation Day: Students should see themselves as orchid seeds

The event was held in the Edward L. Tullis Arena at the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center. In attendance were students, faculty, staff and the public.

“Matriculation Day provides us with an opportunity to come together as a Claflin University family to celebrate our successes," Tisdale said. "It’s also a time to share a vision.”

“Claflin leads a shared vision for the 21st century," Tisdale said. The vision is that the university will be a leader of higher education.

“Next year we will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of this university. How many of anything has almost been around for 150 years?” Tisdale said. “A beacon of light on a hilltop high.”

Dr. Marlena Washington, assistant professor of chemistry, and Tisdale said the largest-ever freshman class and other students should think of themselves as an orchid seed.  “Orchids are the most beautiful flower in the world. Your dreams and your goals are your orchid.”

“In order for those dreams and goals to be obtained, you need four things: faith, hard work, determination and support," Washington said. Family, friends, parents and the Claflin family are present. Faith, hard work and dedication are solely based on the student.

Tisdale offered a silent prayer for those affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Matriculation Day also featured the ROTC, Concert Choir, D.R.E.A.M. and Wind Ensemble. Tisdale recognized the Student Government Association officers.

Following the event, Claflin broke ground for a health and fitness center. The new facility will be available to students and the community.
