Graduation is right around the corner and Claflin University’s graduating class of 2023 is counting down the days till they walk across that commencement stage. It had been said by many, even Claflin University’s president, Dwaun J. Warmack, that the class of 2023 is the best class.
That is the case for graduating senior, Nyra T. Govan. She is 22 years old and was born in Charleston. She currently resides in St. George and is completing her degree in human performance and recreations at the first and oldest HBCU in the state of South Carolina, Claflin.
When asked about her plans after graduation, Nyra said she is “a full-time employee at GirlTrek as the national college campus recruiter.”
GirlTrek is the nation’s largest public health movement for Black women. Its mission is to inspire Black women everywhere to walk, talk and solve problems together. They express uncountable joy, while healing generational traumas, fighting systematic racism, and transforming Black lives. Ultimately, GirlTrek’s goal is to increase life expectancy of Black women in 10 years by 10 years.
In the movement as the national college campus rcruiter, Govan’s overall responsibility is to encourage and emerge young women into GirlTrek’s movement of behavior change early in their lives.
Nyra has always had a passion for athletics and fitness. And that is not only seen through her affiliation with GirlTrek or her being a part of Claflin University’s StompNShake team, but through her fitness Instagram account @VigorFigureFitness. In her fitness journey, she emphasizes that she has made healthier decisions that will not only affect her in the present but also in the future.
“I am breaking generational curses and being the example that young people need in a world full of trends,” she says.
Asked about how she feels about gradating, she said, “I do not have the whole staircase figured out, but as I enter the world … I know that I am headed in the right direction.”
