                                Latricia Jones

Every morning, Latricia Jones walks across Claflin University’s campus with purpose.

In her arms, she carries more than just books, she carries the dreams of her family, the weight of her many responsibilities, and the future she’s carefully crafting, one step at a time.

A proud Houston, Texas, native, Latricia is a senior majoring in political science with a minor in public relations, and a distinguished member of Claflin’s honors college. But her impact reaches far beyond the classroom.

She serves as captain of the cheer team, president of the Enveux Modeling Team, Ms. Omega Psi Phi, a SAAC representative, the secretary of the campus NAACP chapter, and a recent initiate of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

Balancing it all isn’t easy. Some days are heavier than others.

“Being involved in so much definitely comes with challenges,” Latricia said. “But seeing my ideas come to life makes it all worth it.”

She credits her success in leadership to effective communication and the ability to compromise. These are skills she’s learned and sharpened through each role she holds.

As a young entrepreneur, Latricia runs her own makeup business, Famous Beats, and is known across campus for her talent. From student photo shoots to professional campus events, she is often booked as the go-to makeup artist.

One particularly demanding day, Latricia had three back-to-back classes, a leadership meeting, and a three-hour cheer practice. By the time she finally had a moment to breathe, homesickness hit her hard. Her body was exhausted, and her spirit, even more so.

But still, she showed up.

“I have to remember that I’m not doing this just for me,” Latricia said. “I’m also doing it for everyone back home.”

Latricia is the first in her family to leave home for college. Coming from a large, tight-knit family, leaving Houston was no easy decision. She had other schools in mind, but one visit to Claflin changed everything.

“Claflin chose me, I didn’t choose it,” she often says with pride.

Even on the toughest days, she knows she made the right choice.

After graduation, Latricia plans to pursue a master’s in public administration, with intentions of earning her doctorate soon after. Her long-term goal is to run a nonprofit that oversees strategic funding and marketing efforts, ensuring underserved communities have access to the resources they need to thrive.

Latricia’s journey hasn’t been without obstacles, but it’s hers. And she’s only just getting started.
