VP Kamala Harris says re-election is deserved

Vice President Kamala Harris made a stop at South Carolina State University to give one final message to the voters ahead of the first-in-the-nation Democratic presidential primary held Feb. 3.

Harris appeared Friday, Feb. 2, at the campus’ fine arts center, and students from South Carolina State and neighboring Claflin University were invited to attend. Focusing on the concerns of the average voter’s household, Harris delivered the results of her and President Joe Biden’s three-year term.

“Over the past three years, President Biden and I have lowered costs, created opportunity and are building an economy that works for working people,” Harris said.

"We have created more than 14-1/2 million new jobs, increased wages for tens of millions of Americans.”

With the economy being one of the leading issues in this year's election, voters are keeping an eye on what candidates can deliver. Harris assured the crowd that the economy is thriving and will continue to do so if the Biden-Harris administration is re-elected.

“Consumer confidence is up, and consumer spending is at an all-time high,” Harris said. “And although we have more work to do, let us be clear, America's economy continues to be the strongest in the world.”

As part of their campaign efforts, the Biden-Harris administration praises its student loan relief funds. For rural communities though, connectivity is another issue Harris said that the administration has been working hard to solve that for students.

“In 2020, South Carolina says, ‘We need to take on the issue of high-speed internet,'” Harris said. “Because you voted in 2020, President Biden and I are connecting every person in America with high-speed internet, including more than 100,000 families right here in South Carolina.”

After asking the attendees to raise their hands if they had a family member with diabetes, Harris said that the Biden-Harris administration has been working to lower the costs of health care. This fulfilled a call made in 2020.

“For too many years, too many of our seniors had to make the choice of either filling their prescription or filling their refrigerators,” Harris said. “Because you voted, President Biden and I took on Big Pharma and we kept the cost of insulin for our seniors at $35 a month. And we kept the entire cost of prescription medication to $2,000 a year.”

The campaign event focused on the Biden-Harris administration’s alliance with the people. She said that former republican President Donald Trump does not share these goals.

“We work for you, the American people, and every day we fight for you. Sadly, however, that is not true for everyone,” Harris said. “Former President Trump has made clear time and time again, his fight is not for the people; he fights for himself.”

Harris said that in this election voters must ask themselves what kind of country they want to live in. “Do we want to live in a country of liberty, freedom and rule of law or a country of disorder fear and hate?”
