Mar 21, 2014
Claflin University’s fourth annual Women’s Conference will focus on “Empowering Sisterhood: Power, Passion and Purpose” when it convenes Thursday and Friday, March 27-28.
The event, held in March during Women’s History Month, will feature a health fair, beauty night and Women’s Leadership Luncheon, which is set for noon to 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, in Ministers’ Hall.
Luncheon speaker will be actress and singer Dawnn Lewis, who is perhaps best-known for her role as Jalessa Vinson on the hit television sitcom and The Cosby Show spin-off A Different World. The show, which aired for six seasons (1987-1993) on NBC, centered on the life of students at the fictional historically black Hillman College in Virginia.
Lewis also appeared on Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, and is a Grammy Award-winning singer, film and stage actor, and TV creator/producer who continues to film guest and recurring roles on a number of television shows and gives voice to animated characters for various TV series. In 2000, she won the Best Actress NAACP Image Award for her performance in The Marriage.
Lewis serves on the National Advisory Board of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, to be built in Atlanta, Ga. She also teaches master classes, mentors youth across the country, gives motivational lectures, and lends her support to such causes as the United Negro College Fund, the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, the United States Conference on AIDS, the KIS Foundation for Sickle Cell Disease and more.
