Heritage Society Gifts Increase Dramatically, New Members Honored
May 23, 2014
This year, non-cash and planned gifts to Claflin University leaped from $73,000 last year to $452,000. This outstanding support was recognized during the Heritage Society Luncheon on May 8.
Fourteen members were honored during the event, with giving levels ranging from $1,000 to $100,000. A planned gift includes life insurance policies, wills, in-kind gifts, real property and other forms of irrevocable, non-cash gifts. Claflin University has been acknowledging Heritage Society honorees at a luncheon during Commencement Week since 2002. The luncheon is the University's way of thanking those individuals who give generously to the University each year.
“This year, we saw a 419 percent increase in giving in this category,” said Leandra Hayes, assistant vice president for major and planned gifts. “What this shows us is that people are buying into planned and non-cash gifts as an option to give back to the University.”
Gifts included a $100,000 life insurance policy from the Central Savannah River Area Alumni Chapter, software and products from Microsoft, advertising from The Times and Democrat, and gifts to provide resources to the H.V. Manning Library from Rev. John Culp and Rev. Whittaker V. Middleton.
“When you look at the list of donors this year and the various categories, we are very pleased and encouraged indeed,” President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale said. “Thank you all for your gifts. They are indeed making a difference.”
The awards are based on non-cash gifts made to the University in the form of an in-kind or planned gift from April 1, 2013, to March 31, 2014.
