Political Activist, Author and Entrepreneur Kevin Powell to Speak at Honors Banquet

Claflin University will host its 21st Annual Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College Banquet on Thursday, April 9, at 6 p.m. in the Jonas T. Kennedy Health & Physical Education Center.
Political activist, author, and entrepreneur Kevin Powell will be the featured speaker. The topic of Powell’s message will be "Educating the Hip-Hop Generation!"
Powell appeared in the first season of MTV's reality television series, The Real World: New York in 1992. He has written for publications such as Esquire, Newsweek, The Washington Post, Essence, Rolling Stone, New York Amsterdam News, and Vibe, where he was a founding staff member and served as a senior writer.
Powell, who attended Rutgers University, made three unsuccessful runs for the United States Congress in New York's 10th congressional district.

During the Banquet, the seniors Honors College students are recognized and freshman in the Honors College retire their Honors College Beanies, which all honors freshman wear to promote a special bond of unity and a lasting memory of their first-year experience, in a special candlelight ceremony.
