Jul 11, 2016

Claflin Professor Dr. Nan LiDr. Nan Li, associate professor in the School of Education at Claflin University, joined a group of educators from across the county to create content for Teaching ELLs across Content Areas: Issues and Strategies, a book for the English Language Learner (ELL) population --  students who are learning the English language in addition to their native language.

Li served as a contributing author and editor for the book which offers strategies and content areas for educators teaching language arts, science, mathematics, technology and psychology classes in grades K-12.  The book also discusses interventions for Spanish speaking English Language Learners.

One of the great features of this book is that it provides strategies and resources for ELL teachers,” said Li, who has written more than 20 publications and is widely-respected for preparing teachers to work with Ells.  “The book is reader – friendly and carefully crafted to effectively bridge the communication gap between students and teachers.

Li’s previous literary work on this topic was A Book for Every Teacher: Teaching English Language Learners, which also provides helpful teaching tips and information for K-12 teachers to successfully work with ELLs.

Li directs several projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education.  She has received numerous awards during her distinguished career as an author and educator including the 2013 South Carolina Governor’s Distinguished Professor of Award presented by the S.C. Commission on Higher Education. She also received the Exemplary Service to the Teaching Profession Award from the South Carolina Association of Teacher Educators (SCATE).

Teaching ELLs across Content Areas: Issues and Strategies, a book for the English Language Learner was reviewed by leading educators from universities in California, South Carolina, North Carolina, Chicago, Florida, Ohio and Washington, D.C. who also served as editors and contributing authors.  The book can be purchased at www.amazon.com or www.BarnesandNoble.com.
