Claflin University Theatre Ensemble Competes in Statewide Competition

The Claflin University Theatre Ensemble took a team of actors and orators to University of South Carolina Lancaster on Saturday, April 13, to compete in the South Carolina Speech & Theatre Association's Annual College Festival competition. At this event, competitors compete in various performance studies, public speaking, and theatre categories.
Team Claflin competed in the category of Public Speaking and Theatre and brought home the following awards:
- Impromptu Speaking - Valaya Burke (Second Place)
- Audition Monologues - Nucretia Gamble (First Place)
- Duet Acting -Deanna Brown & Isaiah Brown (First Place), Isaiah Robinson & Bryson Scott (Second Place), and Valaya Burke & Nucretia Gamble (Third Place)
- Ensemble Acting - First Place with an excerpt from the Theatre Ensemble's recent Dinner Theatre Production of Wine in the Wilderness by Alice Childress performed by Deanna Brown, Rosa Lee Dozier, Isaiah Robinson, Bryson Scott, and Ryan Washington.
The Claflin University team was coached by Annette Grevious, associate professor of speech & drama, with the assistance of Cedric Rembert, assistant professor of speech & drama. Rembert serves as vice president of the of the South Carolina Speech and Theatre Association's College Division, and Grevious is completing her term as president of SCSTA.
