Marcus Oliver to be Crowned Mister Claflin University

Oct 24, 2019

The crowning ceremony for Marcus L. Oliver as Mister Claflin University for the 2019-2020 academic year will be held in the W.V. Middleton Fine Arts Center on Tuesday, October 29 at 7 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.

A native of Camden, S.C., Oliver graduated from Camden High School and worked part-time as a
program specialist at the Boys and Girls Club where he mentored students, assisted with homework, and helped facilitate after school activities. As a senior at Camden High School, Marcus was voted "Best Smile" and his smile continues to be one of his most noticeable features.

At Claflin University, Oliver is a junior middle-level education major with concentrations in math and science. His career goals include working as a middle school teacher, obtaining a master's degree and ultimately teaching at the collegiate level.

As Mister Claflin, Oliver is working to "redefine the vision" for Claflin students to what it means to be a servant leader. He does this by embracing community service with a smile, and actively seeking how he can make his campus community and the Orangeburg community better. Oliver has fostered relationships with Mellichamp Elementary School, William J. Clark Middle School and Howard School Middle School. His plans include starting mentorship and after-school programs at each school for three days a week.

Marcus has an incredible commitment to leadership and he currently serves as the vice  president of Call Me MiSTER. He is a member of the School of Education and Leadership organizations (S.O.E.L), Men of Valor Emphasizing Respect and Service (MOVERS), and Serving Mental Illness Learning Experience (S.M.I.L.E.). He also serves his country as an E4 Specialist in the Army National Guard.
