Juneteenth: Chef Adrian Lipscombe Works to Establish Black Foodways – Friday, June 18 (8am Hour)

Today, black farmers own less than 2% of America’s farmland. Morgan Radford joins TODAY to share the story of a woman looking to change that. Chef Adrian Lipscombe created a go-fund-me account to help find and purchase land that would be used to focus on agriculture and African American Foodways. She started the project a year ago in the middle of the George Floyd protests. Now, just over one year later, she has found and is closing on land. The project is called “40 Acres and a Mule” - a reference to the short lived reparations that gave former slaves land after the Civil War only to have it taken back shortly after and was founded with the goal of using this land to train and get black farmers back in the game! Chefs like Mashama Bailey, Michael Twitty, David Thomas and Tonya Thomas have all joined to help the cause!
