Congressman James Clyburn (D-SC, 6th District) presented a check to Claflin University President Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack for $17,417,000 from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for construction of an Innovation Center for Computer Science and Biotechnology. Claflin is the first Historically Black College/University (HBCU) to receive support from the NIST construction fund. The presentation was held at Claflin’s Tingley Memorial Hall.
The Innovation Center for Computer Science and Biotechnology aligns with Claflin's growing reputation as a premier liberal arts college/university and its widely heralded STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) agenda. The state-of-the-art teaching, learning, and research facility will increase the University's capacity for research in emerging bioscience areas, environmental science, and cybersecurity.
Claflin's School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has strategically crafted an enhanced vision of academic programs emphasizing research, scholarly contributions, and creative activity to increase student preparedness. The Innovation Center for Computer Science and Biotechnology will expand the in-house research infrastructure to allow more students to participate in bench-top cutting-edge research.
