Claflin University’s 30th Presidential Scholarship Gala Highlighted by Record Attendance, Fundraising Success, and Featured Artist Johnny Gill

Dec 18, 2024

Claflin University's 30th Presidential Scholarship Gala celebrated exceptional academic accomplishments and the persistent generosity of the institution's loyal supporters. A sumptuous meal and a riveting performance by dynamic singer/songwriter Johnnie Gill augmented an evening of elegance, congeniality, and fun.

Tammy McCottry, the CEO of Tammy Media Group, LLC., was the Mistress of Ceremonies. She is also an author, motivational speaker, TV host, and executive producer of The Tammy Show.

"We initially thought we would reach maximum capacity at about 535 guests," said Claflin President Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack, referencing the projected attendance for the annual black-tie event.  This year's gala was the first to be held in Claflin's New Student Center.  "But I'm excited to say our attendance reached 650.  So, I say thank you for investing in the future of these amazing scholars."

Presidential Scholars are high-achieving students who receive full tuition, room and board, and a book stipend because of their outstanding academic accomplishments.  These students also plan to pursue graduate or professional studies after earning their Claflin degree. Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership potential, involvement in extracurricular activities, community service, and character.

Among the other highlights of the affair was a presentation by Mike Leach, general manager of Orangeburg Nissan, which donated $500,000 to support the University.

"Thank you, Mike and Orangeburg Nissan, for believing in the work that happens at Claflin University – the Elevation and Transformation," Warmack said. "I have had several conversations with Marcus Johnson about how he has supported the University and how we want him even more involved," Warmack said. "This contribution reflects what we call the "Claflin Magic."  Johnson is a philanthropist and principal owner of the Orangeburg Nissan dealership.

Another special attraction of the evening was a presentation by Claflin's eighth president and current President Emeritus, Dr. Henry N. Tisdale. It was 30 years ago—during the first of his 25 years as president—that he established the Presidential Scholarship Gala.

"We wanted to host a black-tie event for the community that would also raise money for scholarships," Tisdale said. In addition to spending time with friends and former colleagues, Tisdale announced that he had completed his book, and it would soon be on sale.  He said the book is titled "Beyond the Western Walls. Audacious Transformation of a Small Liberal Arts Institution."  The book documents 25 years of Claflin's legacy and history from 1994 until today.

"The book is also written to be shared, not just with alumni and friends and family, but with other small liberal arts institutions and especially our historically black colleges and universities," he said. "And if you read the book, you will better understand visionary leadership and transformational change." You better understand how important it is to value people and have teamwork."

Tisdale further delighted the audience by pledging a percentage of the book sales to Claflin.

Warmack introduced members of Claflin's Board of Trustees who were present and thanked them for their "ongoing commitment and dedication to Claflin University."

Claflin is celebrating 155 years of existence this year," Warmack said.  "When you put that in context, and I'm only the ninth president in 155 years -- that means I am standing on the shoulders of eight giants that came before me," he continued.  "Claflin continues to do remarkable work, and U.S. News & World Report has ranked us the No. 1 HBCU in South Carolina for 15 consecutive years.  We are an amazing institution.  While other schools are consolidating and merging – Claflin is growing."
