Theta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. Establishes the Mary Louise Layton Memorial Scholarship at Claflin University
Jun 30, 2025
The Theta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. has established the Mary Louise Layton Memorial Scholarship, honoring the remarkable life and legacy of Claflin University alumna Mary Louise Layton, whose academic brilliance, musical talent, and lifelong commitment to youth development left an enduring impact on the Claflin community and beyond.
Born on January 27, 1988, in Okinawa, Japan, Layton passed away on March 11, 2025. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business (magna cum laude) in 2010 and a master's degree in business at Claflin in 2012. She was also a distinguished member of the Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College and the Claflin University Concert Choir. She performed internationally in China and Scotland with a classically trained soprano voice that drew comparisons to Leontyne Price.
"Mary Louise Layton represented the very best of Claflin University -- intellectually curious, artistically gifted, and deeply committed to serving others," said Dr. Isaiah McGee, dean of Claflin University's School of Humanities and Social Sciences. "This scholarship will ensure her legacy continues to uplift and inspire future generations of visionary leaders."
Layton was a lifelong learner, athlete, tutor, and educator. Her professional career centered on advancing young scholars, particularly through her work with Envision by WorldStrides, where she served as a mentor to thousands of elementary school students across the U.S. Layton was recently promoted to the Family and Scholar Ambassador Specialist position, which provided opportunities to amplify her passion for educational equity and youth empowerment.
The Mary Louise Layton Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a first- or second-year Claflin University student with an unmet financial need.
